Overview of NME industry
Statistics for NME
· 73% Male /27% female audience.
· 73% ABC1.
· Average age : 25
· Price: £2.30
· Frequency : Weekly
· Target Market: Men aged 17-30
In August 2010 NME saw a drop in sales by 17.3 % where it did have an average weekly circulation of 33,875. This could be because of the recession and people are not buying magazines as they cannot afford them but also because of the drop in film and music sales.73% of NME’s target audience fall into the ABC1 category on the socio-economic scale. This shows that the majority of their audience are going to have high paid jobs and can afford to spend money on luxuries like magazines. The price of NME is £2.30 which I believe is a reasonable price but, as it is a weekly magazine; I can imagine the majority of sales would be from higher class audience as they can afford to pay for this every week. The majority of their audience is male (73%) and the average age of their reader is 25. This comfortably falls into their target market of Men aged between 17 and 30.
The adverts included in the magazines would appeal to their target audience and reflect their audience well. For example there are products like Camera’s, clothes and converse shoes which well-paid young men will all want and are more than likely to have. These adverts for the shoes and clothing brands will appeal to the young men as they care a lot about their image and appearance. The advert for the camera will also appeal to the 59% of the audience who said they liked keeping up with the latest technologies. Other adverts include those for festivals and music tours. Again, it would appeal to the vast amount of their audience as 77 % of them attended at least one music festival or concert in 2007.
